2003 BMW K Series: what breaks, and at what mileage

What breaks on the 2003 BMW K Series

Only 7 defect reports have been filed with NHTSA about the 2003 BMW K Series, which is too few to compute mileage percentiles or a risk score. The reports reported other fuel system problem.

When each failure gets reported

Median
  1. Other fuel system problem 20k
  2. Differential or transfer case failure 54k
  3. Other powertrain problem 43k

Every report with an odometer reading, cumulative, from 0 to 200,000 miles. A curve that climbs early is a car with early problems, whatever its total.

Failure mode System Reports With reading 25th Median 75th Per 1,000 Typical repair Severity
Other fuel system problem fuel 3 3 — 20k — 0.6 $300–$2,200 High
Differential or transfer case failure drivetrain 2 2 — 54k — 0.4 $900–$4,200 High
Other powertrain problem transmission 2 2 — 43k — 0.4 $400–$4,500 High

Rate per 1,000 uses a fleet-size estimate derived from recall paperwork for this exact model year. It is a lower bound. Repair costs are typical independent-shop ranges for the failure, not figures from these reports.

Bmw k1200lt motorcycle. Quick disconnects (plastic) on fuel lines deteriorate and leak fuel. Very dangerous. No fire but could have been one. When fuel leaks it sprays over right leg and foot. I will replace with brass fittings. *tr

Differential or transfer case failure

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 bmw k 1200 lte . The contact stated while driving 75 MPH the contact heard a noise and the rear wheel locked up causing the vehicle to skid. The rear wheel suddenly unlocked and the contact gained control of the vehicle and pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was deemed undrivable so the contact had the vehicle towed home. The noise was due to a busted ring and pinion causing grease to spill on to the rear of the vehicle. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer, but he noticed several complaints on this year make and model regarding the ring and pinion. The failure mileage was 54,000. Updated 01/14/11 *bf the rear seal failed which caused the rear drive gear to lose lubrication. Updated 03/28/11

Other powertrain problem

While driving at 60 MPH on the highway, a noise started coming from the drive train of the bike. At the same time there was a small vibration coming from the same location. It could be felt in the seat and footpegs. As I was only a few miles from home I checked everything which could be checked without taking anything apart. Everything thing was fine including the wheels and tires. All seemed to be tight. There was no fluid leaks coming from the bike. As I found this unsua,l and was aware of the driveline problems with this model bike, I decided to contact this site. I really do not want to ride the bike any further until I find the problem. The last thing I need is to have a major malfunction failure while operating the bike. I have been riding bikes since I was 16, and now I'm 63. I rode motorcycles for the manchester, nh police department, and I'm familiar with the mechanicals of these units. *tr

Recalls on the 2003 model year

NHTSA has issued 1 recall campaign covering the 2003 BMW K Series, affecting an estimated 4,875 vehicles. A recall is a different kind of evidence from a complaint: it is the regulator and the manufacturer agreeing that something has to be fixed, and the fix is free for as long as the car exists.

The campaigns cover fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fitt. Whether the work was actually done on the car in front of you is a question only the VIN can answer, and the manufacturer or NHTSA will answer it free.

Recalls also distort complaint counts. Publicity about a campaign reminds owners that complaining is possible, so reports for a recalled component often spike after the recall rather than before it.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

39,000 vehicles 2004-01-15
Defect
On certain motorcycles, the o-ring in fuel line quick-disconnect coupling could become damaged and lead to a fuel leak. There is also a problem involving crimp-type hose clamps, which can result in a fuel leak.
Consequence
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, adjust all crimp-type hose clamps. Also, all fuel line quick-disconnect couplings will be inspected. If a leak is detected, the quick-disconnect o-ring will be replaced. If damaged, the coupling will be replaced. Owner notification began on april 30, 2004. Owners should contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117.

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the car's age. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before assuming it was done.

Every year of the BMW K Series

Scores compare each year against other cars of the same model year, so a low number on an older car is a real result and not an artefact of age.

What the reports on file say

The complaints recorded against the 2003 BMW K Series are other fuel system problem (3 reports, around 20k miles), differential or transfer case failure (2 reports, around 54k miles) and other powertrain problem (2 reports, around 43k miles). With a sample this size these are anecdotes rather than a pattern, and they are shown because somebody looking at this exact car would rather see them than nothing.

Why this page is short

A model year needs about 8 reports before percentiles mean anything, and this one does not have them. Complaint volume tracks how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road, so a thin page usually means a rare car, a new car, or a car whose owners do not file.

Where this comes from. Every figure above is computed from NHTSA owner complaints and recall records for this exact make, model and year. Complaints are voluntary and self-selected, so treat counts as a floor. The methodology page writes out each formula, and the same numbers are available as JSON.
